My father invited me to dinner, held my hand, and told his friends, “Meet the girl I love.” I sat there frightened—Until one of

“This is Emily—the most beloved girl in my life.”
My father held my hand tightly as he said those words.
The four men sitting around the table fell silent at the same time. Two of them stared at me in surprise, the third quickly
looked away, while the white-haired man slowly lowered his glass.
“So she still doesn’t know?” he asked quietly.
My father immediately tightened his grip on my hand.
“Robert, now isn’t the time.”
That was when I realized this dinner was no ordinary gathering.
The previous day, my father had called and asked me not to make any plans for Saturday evening. He never invited me to
restaurants, especially not in front of his friends. Even on my birthdays, he usually limited himself to a brief greeting and an
envelope containing money.
My father had always provided me with everything, but he had never been affectionate. He didn’t hug me. He didn’t tell me
he loved me. He almost never spoke about my mother either. All I knew was that she had died a few months after I was born.
Whenever I asked who I looked like as a child, my father would say:
“You have your mother’s eyes.”
Then he would fall silent and walk away. But that evening, he seemed like a completely different man. He had reserved a
private table at an expensive restaurant and wore the black suit he had kept in his closet for years. In the center of the table
sat a thick brown envelope with my full name written across it.
“What’s inside?” I asked.
“You’ll open it after dinner.”
“Why not now?”
“Because if you open it now, you may not want to stay until the end.”
His answer made my blood run cold.
